Saint John’s Night
Date: 23.06.25
Location: Mallorcan beaches
On the eve of the feast of Saint John, on the night of 23rd to 24th June, Palma celebrates the summer solstice with the popular correfoc and a lively party with fire, dancing and music.
St, John’s Night, the shortest of the year, is largely celebrated on the Balearic islands. The festival’s main symbol is fire which represents renewal and the beginning of a new life cycle, while swimming in the sea symbolises purification.
In Palma, Parque de la Mar hosts various workshops and events for children during the day. Around 11 p.m., the famous correfoc (fire run) begins, during which groups of people dressed as demons chase the participants. There are also processions with a giant creature, the dragon Drak da na Coca. The evening ends with a big batucada performance and drum music that shakes the entire city.
At midnight it’s time for traditional rituals. Many people go to the beaches near the city. This is the only night of the year when it’s allowed to light bonfires on beaches and grill meat, while enjoying the sea breeze and swimming under the moonlight.
