Mallorcan textiles
Llengües fabric and the Vicens factory are closely linked to the history of the Mallorcan textile industry, its popular craftsmanship and its weaving traditions.
Llengües is a traditional Mallorcan fabric with characteristic striped or geometric patterns, the art of which has been passed down from generation to generation of artisans. This fabric of endless ‘tongues’ in Mediterranean colours was used to make folk costumes, as well as household textiles such as bedspreads, tablecloths and other decorative items for the home.
The Vicens factory is a Mallorcan company that has played an important role in the conservation and development of the local textile industry. It was founded in the 19th century and specialised in the production of fabrics, including llengües. The Vicens factory is known for its high-quality products, which combine traditional and modern production techniques. Today, many fabrics are still made on old looms, so the design retains its authenticity. One metre of fabric costs around 40 euros. Authentic llengües are very durable and hardly wear out. It takes about two months from the colouring of the threads to the final product. The fabric is made of cotton and linen, and no more than three colours can be used in the same print.
Considered a symbol of Mallorca’s industrial heritage, Vicens continues to participate in the conservation and promotion of the island’s traditional fabrics. Many hotels and restaurants order and decorate their interiors with this fabric, thus maintaining the tradition and giving a unique character to the space.
