Llaüt is a symbol of the Balearic islands’ marine culture.
Llaüt is a traditional fishing boat widely popular on the Balearic islands, especially in Mallorca. This boat has deep mediterranean roots, throughout centuries it was used for fishing, navigation and transport. Llaüt’s classical shape has a round, wide hull; the bow and stern are slightly raised, which allows it to better overcome the swell of the sea.
In the past these boats were hand made from wood and were equipped with a triangular-shaped lateen sail, inclined forward. This sail provided an effective control of the vessel even in changing winds. Since the mid-20th century, most llaüts have been refitted and equipped with motors, making them more suitable for cruising and tourist rides. Despite the use of modern materials like fiberglass, many boats preserve their traditional look and design.
Today, llaüt isn’t just a functional means of transport, but a meaningful part of the Balearic island’s marine culture. It represents the connection between local people and the sea, the craft of ship building and respect for tradition. The islands regularly host festivals and regattas featuring these boats, and the image of the llaüt itself is often present in the art and tourist symbolism of the region.
