Feast of Beata in Santa Margalida
Date: 28.08.2025 – 27.09.2025
Location: Santa Margalida. Mallorca
Feast of Beata in the town of Santa Margalida in Mallorca is one of the most beloved and colourful festivals on the island that is held annually on the first Sunday of September. It is dedicated to Saint Catalina Tomás, the only saint born in the Balearic islands, who became a symbol of purity, faith and resilience.
The celebrations begin early in the morning, streets are flooded with “demons” running around ringing bells and stirring up the city. Followed by a solemn mass with music bands, folk musicians and dancers. In the evening, there will be a main procession, in which decorated carriages will pass through the streets with participants depicting scenes from the life of the saint. The culmination of the celebration will be the moment when demons in a dance break clay jugs at the feet of the woman representing Beata – a symbol of the temptations she overcame.
The main role in the festival is given to a young woman from Santa Margalida, who is traditionally chosen from local girls. She can be a Beata only once in her life and an invitation for this role is considered a great honour. The whole community is actively involved in the preparation for the holiday — carriages and costumes are created, dances are rehearsed, concerts, children’s competitions, parties and fairs are organized.
More detailed information about the program can be found on the city hall website.
