Celebrations in honor of Saint Catalina Thomas (Feast of Beata)
Date: 16.07.25-28.07.25
Location: Valdemossa. Mallorca
Feast of Beata is a summer celebration held in Valdemossa, a small mountain town in Mallorca. It is dedicated to Saint Catalina Thomas, born in Valdemossa and renowned for her orthodoxy and religious service. In 1930, the Catholic Church canonized Catalina, and July 28 is celebrated as her feast day as the patron saint of the city.
A special feature of the festival is the tradition of placing ceramic plaques with the image of the saint at the door of each house in Valldemossa, and when leaving the house, residents touch them for good luck.
The central event is a mess in the church of Saint Catalina Thomas, accompanied by processions, prayers and church rituals. The main procession, the Triumphal Chariot, passes through the streets of the village. Each chariot symbolizes a different stage in the life of the saint. A young woman is chosen from the villagers to represent Beata on the main chariot. She is accompanied by angels, shepherds, traditional musicians and devils, dancing around and trying to break the holy vessels.
Apart from the religious ceremonies, the celebrations include performances by local musicians and dancers with traditional mallorcan cheremias and dancing bal de bot (https://bravobaleares.com/ru/bal-de-bot/ ) As part of the celebrations, exhibitions and master classes are organized, and fairs with local delicacies are held on the streets of the city.
The town is decorated with flowers and ribbons; the streets are adorned with colorful flower wreaths, flowerpots and whole stands with fresh plants. Particularly popular are local flowers and plants – lavender, petunias and oleanders, which add brightness and aroma to the holiday.
