The Day of Light in the Cathedral. 02.02.2025
Location: Palma
The Day of Light in the Palma Cathedral is a fascinating event that takes place twice a year, on the 2nd of February and the 11th of November. This celebration is linked to the unique natural phenomenon, when the sunlight penetrates through the cathedral’s stained glass rose window, creating a magical light illusion.
On these days, if the weather is clear, the morning light shines through the big stained window on the eastern side of the cathedral and reflects on the opposite wall, creating a perfect octagon of light. At the peak of the phenomenon, two stained glass rose windows – one on the east side and one on the west – form an “eight”. This symbolises the harmony and unity between the light and dark sides of the world, which carries a deep spiritual meaning.
The celebration attracts many visitors who want to enjoy this rare sight and appreciate the talent of the cathedral’s architects.
