The Banner Day

Date: 31.12.25

Location: Palma

The Banner Day (Fiesta de l’Estandart) is one of the oldest festivals in Europe, celebrated annually in Palma on the New Year’s Eve. It is dedicated to the conquest of Mallorca by King Jaume I of Aragon in 1229, which marked the island’s accession to the Christian world.

The central event of the celebration is the ceremony of unfurling the royal banner in front of the City Hall. This symbolises the conquest of the island and its subduction to the Aragon crown. The action takes place on Plaza de Cort, the historic centre of Palma and a place where locals come together for important events ever since the old days.
