TAO Dance Theater is a professional contemporary dance group founded in 2008 by Tao Ye, Duan Ni and Wang Hao. The shows from the “Number series”, created on the basis of simple artistic principles and an aesthetic that springs from pure body movement, were performed in more than 40 countries across 5 continents. Since its establishment, this Chinese theatre has participated in more than 100 international arts festivals.

Performance “13 & 14”

“13” is choreographer Tao Ye’s twelfth work in the “Number Series.” The concept of the Trinity is associated with the number 13, uniting three forms of stage expression: solo, duet, and group dance. These three modes of interaction and connection between bodies form the holistic structure of the piece.

In the performance, the dancers unite into a single whole, then gradually separate and transform into various configurations. The continuous changes of the choreographic sequence create a complex physical universe in which collision, compression, fusion, fall, rebound, attraction, and countless other possibilities manifest.

Through slow, medium, and fast rhythms, bodies transform into water, mountains, rocks, and all types of natural forms. Thus, the body becomes a vehicle capable of revealing the fluid and unpredictable nature of the imagination.

The concepts of one, two, and multiple dimensions form the structural rule of the work. In this production, the choreographer simultaneously explores the transformations of the body, space, and time, creating a unified, chaotic whole. Combining strict and open-ended concepts, the choreography conveys the various states of a present, concrete, yet simultaneously fluid reality.

Rhythm is the connection that unites all forms of life.

“14,” a work from Tao Ye’s “Number Series,” explores rhythm and transformation. How to challenge a new context for the body? This time, Tao Ye departs from his previous creative method based on repetitive cycles and uses a constantly shifting texture of movement to explore the spatiotemporal possibilities that exist between movement and stillness.

The music of this work boldly embodies a unique minimalist and balanced character, using the movement of clock hands as an analogy for the complex bodily dynamics of dance. Through audiovisual interaction based on the principle of “less is more,”
