Saint Anthony’s Day

Date: 16.01.25-17.01.25

Venue: Sa Pobla. Mallorca

Saint Anthony’s Day (Sant Antoni) in Mallorca is one of the most important annual events.

Saint Anthony, known as the patron of animals, is revered for protecting and healing pets. There are many events in his honor. The streets of cities and villages are filled with flames of fireplaces, around which families and friends gather for a joint meal and singing folk songs accompanied by the traditional instrument of the Chimboma.

A special atmosphere is created by participants in costume of demons (dimonis) that symbolise the temptations that were overcome by Saint Anthony. They make processions, dance and entertain the public by adding a little bit of theatrics to the performance.

The tradition of blessing animals is also a crucial part of the event. Owners bring their pets to churches for blessings to protect them from sicknesses and misfortune.
