“Sa Rua” Carnival

The Sa Rua Carnival in Palma is not just a holiday but an important cultural event deeply rooted in the island’s culture. Held every year on the eve of Lent, it symbolises a farewell to winter and anticipation of the spring renewal. During these days the streets of Palma turn into stages for art and self expression. Festively decorated carrosas (large carts) or platforms travel through the city streets, followed by people in carnival costumes. The participants, including both professional groups and ordinary citizens, spend months creating the costumes and platform decorations, turning them into moving pieces of art. Every platform tells its own story: allegories, cultural and historical references, fantasy worlds and more… The music plays a key role in the carnival’s atmosphere. Marching orchestras, drummers and dance groups set the rhythm of the parade, inviting spectators to become part of the celebration. The combination of visual and musical richness creates a breathtaking spectacle, definite to leave a lasting impression.
Competitions for the best costume and the best platform play an important part in the carnival. The jury ranks originality, artistic execution and overall presentation, with the winners receiving well-deserved prizes.
Sa Rua’s route takes the carnival through all the iconic streets of Palma: La Rambla, Sa Riera, Union, Jaime III, King Juan Carlos I Square.
