Local pastry. Cocarroi
Cocarroi (‘Cocarrois’ in Catalan) is a traditional Mallorcan dish, made with a special half-moon shaped pastry and filled with various vegetables. This pastry is very popular in the Balearic Islands and especially in Mallorca. It is served both in everyday life and at parties or family gatherings.
The filling can be very varied. For example, cauliflower, spinach, chard (beet leaves), potatoes and onions. Sometimes sultanas or pine nuts are added, as well as a little lard or bacon.
The dough is usually made with flour, olive oil, water and sometimes lard, which gives it a delicate texture. The dough can be either savoury or sweet. The filling is placed in the centre of the rolled-out dough, then folded into a half-moon shape and the edges sealed. It is baked in the oven until golden brown.
You can buy and taste the puff pastry in any bakery in Palma.
Bon appétit.
