XIX century – the century of portrait. Works from the Prado Museum collection. 22.11.24-02.03.25
Venue: Palma, Caixa Forum
The National Prado Museum will present to the residents and guests of Mallorca the first exhibition in Spain entirely dedicated to the portrait of the nineteenth century in all its manifestations and techniques: painting, sculpture, miniature, watercolor, sketching, lithography and photography. In the Caixa Forum you can see the works of such masters as Soroya, Madrazo, Rosales, Alzina and the renowned Goya.
The 19th century Spanish portrait is a combination of realism and romanticism, a characteristic of the art of that era. This period of art is distinguished by attention to detail, naturalistic images of the characters, admiration for their greatness. Masters such as Francisco Goya have become famous and influential figures of their time thanks to their talents and skills.
In the portraits, artists often depicted representatives of aristocracy and rich bourgeoisie, transmitting not only the appearance of characters, but also their social status, interests and inner peace. The drama and refinement of the images were emphasized by deep shades and soft shadows, and all features of the face and clothes were carefully drawn. The works presented at the exhibition are so perfect that they could compete with modern color photography.
