Water fight “Canamunt against Canavall”

”Canamunt against Canavall” is an annual mass water fight held in Palma at the end of summer. This event springs from a historic rivalry between two neighbourhoods of the city: Canamunt (high city) and Canavall (low city), whose rivalry started back in XVI century and was caused by a battle between influential families and political interests.
The modern interpretation of this conflict turned into a colourful city festival; participants split into two teams — the reds (Canamunt) and the yellows (Canavall) — and hold a huge water fight on the streets. Parc de la Mar and the foot of the Cathedral are the main venues for the celebration. Thousands of people show up with water guns and buckets to get splashed with water, reminding about the city’s past with peace and humour.
Before the fight the teams rally in different corners of the city and parade with music and flags towards each other. After the water fight comes a festive truce — Festa de la Concòrdia, participants in black clothes with lit candles symbolically “bury” the old rivalry.
The celebration is accompanied by music, dance, costumes and a great mood. This is one of the most vibrant and unique events in Mallorca and anyone can participate — you just have to pick a side and bring a water weapon!
