‘The Burial of Sardine’
Date: 04.03.25 Start at 7:00 p.m.
Venue: Muro. Mallorca
‘The Burial of the Sardine’ (Entierro de la Sardina) is a traditional Spanish carnival ritual symbolising the end of the holidays and the beginning of Lent.
The locals organise a symbolic funeral for the sardine, accompanied by processions and costume shows. In the evening, a theatrical and solemn funeral procession takes place in the streets, where the ‘deceased’ sardine is carried on a stretcher. People dress up and mourn, parodying funeral ceremonies. Often they deliberately portray excessive grief, making the spectacle comical. At the end, the sardine is burned on a bonfire – symbolising purification and renewal.
