As part of the XXVII season of the Festival of Greco-Latin Theatre, two productions will take place this year: ‘The Bacchantes’ by Euripides and ‘The Box’ by Plautus. This cultural event is organised by a theatre association that aims to introduce teenagers to productions of classical tragedies and comedies.
Morning performances for schoolchildren:
‘The Bacchantes’ by Euripides
The play tells of the emergence of the cult of Dionysus in Greece, a religion very different from traditional Greek belief. Dionysus arrives in Thebes in the guise of a mortal and drives the women of the city to madness, forcing them to go to the Cypheron Mountains to perform his rites there. Cadmus, the founder of Thebes, and Tiresias, the soothsayer, decide to accept the new cult. However, the king of Thebes Pentheus, grandson of Cadmus, categorically opposes this, for which he is met with a cruel punishment.
‘The Box’ by Plautus
The play tells the story of a young girl, Selene, who was abandoned immediately after birth, and she grew up in the house of a courtesan. Selene falls in love with a young man from a good family named Alcesimarchus, who reciprocates her love. However, the young man’s father wants to marry him to a girl from his social circle. The conflict between love and social conventions becomes the central theme of this comedy. Eventually, after a series of twists and turns, Selena’s noble origins are revealed and her real mother recognises her. This allows her to marry her lover.
