«Cardinal points» exhibition. Jessica Stockholder
Date: 31.01.25 – 24.08.25
Venue: Palma. Mallorca
The new exhibition «Cardinal points» by renowned American artist Jessica Stockholder opens at the Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art.
The works of Jessica Stockholder (the artist was born in Seattle, USA, in 1959) demonstrate the complex relationship between the illusory space of painting and the physical presence of sculpture. They are a paradigm of the so-called extended painting, a painting that can transform context into content, conquering architectural space and provoking a transition from the two traditional dimensions of painting to the three dimensions of real space.
Stockholder uses a variety of materials and techniques to create installations that can both utilise and transform the space in which they are located.
To understand Jessica Stockholder’s style, one must know the fundamental premise of the meaning behind them: colour is always ready to impose itself on the material. Colour takes on symbolic potential, cultural symbolism, because colours change following time and place. And Stockholder seeks this relationship between colour, space and the human.
In Hollow Places Fat, Hollow Places Thin (2011), the artist uses an unusual approach: she silkscreens shapes and colours onto wooden boards and then cuts into them to create voids. This helps to reveal the natural texture of the wood, turning it into a piece of art.
In the installation Sides of the World (2025), created for the Es Baluard Museum, viewers must move around the work to understand it. This action is reminiscent of a periscope, which allows the entire work to be seen from different angles.
