Saint George’s day
Date: 23.04.25
Location: Palma. Mallorca
Saint George’s day is an analogue of Valentine’s day that is celebrated in Catalonia and Mallorca. It’s a day of roses, books and love. The history of the holiday springs from a beautiful legend. In an ancient town of Monblan, a dragon terrorized the local population. They were forced to sacrifice jewels, animals and even people. One day the lot fell on the king’s daughter. Then the king promised that the one who saves his daughter from the dragon will marry her. A young man called George volunteered. He killed the dragon, and where his blood was spilled, roses grew. He gave the most beautiful flower to the princess.
On this day, it is customary to give each other roses and books, as this day is also celebrated as the Book Day. Palma turns into a large open-air library, where you can choose books for every taste and then give them to your loved ones.
