”Roots” by Katharina Grosse

The exhibition “Roots” by German artist Katharina Grosse at the cultural hall Llotja in Palma is a large-scale art installation created specifically for the historic gothic building. Instead of a traditional art exposition the painter turns the whole space into one work of art: the floor is covered with bright coloured waves and in the center there are hills of multi-colored pigments, earth and stones. Intense red, blue, purple, green and yellow undertones create an impression of a live natural landscape, as if appearing amongst the stone pillars. The exhibition explores the themes of human connection to nature, heritage and memories, while offering visitors an alternative view on Llotja’s architecture. Through the combination of contemporary art and historical space, viewers find themselves to be not just observers, but participants in the artistic experience, immersed in the world of color and form created by the artist.
