Matanza and Saint Thomas Day
Date: 14.12.25
Venue: Sineu
In Sineu, the ancient village tradition of Matanza and St Thomas’s Day are closely intertwined, representing important cultural events in the city life. These events combine the traditions of agriculture, cooking and religious customs, creating a unique holiday that allows you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient Mallorca.
Matanza, related to traditional pig slaughter and meat cooking, is held in the cold season. In Sineu and other parts of Majorca, families come together to work on meat processing, cooking sobrasadas (pork sausage with red pepper and spices), botifarro (blood sausage) and other traditional sausages. After all the work is finished, a holiday begins, which is accompanied by abundant treats with local dishes, wine and sweets.
The Feast of Saint Thomas (Fira de Sant Tomas) – an event that gathers many locals and visitors. The fair sells traditional local products, handicrafts and souvenirs. Music, dancing and performances everywhere create the atmosphere of a real folk celebration. At this time in Sineu everyone can try traditional Mallorcan dishes such as ensaimada, toast with sobrasada and local cheeses.
