“Jaws” 50th Anniversary

In 2025, Steven Spielberg’s legendary film ‘‘Jaws’’ turns 50 years old. The anniversary is followed by large-scale celebrations around the world, from special cinema screenings to the release of a new documentary and sales of collector’s editions.
The “Jaws” original premiere was held June 20 1975, and since then the film didn’t just become a cinematographic phenomenon but a founder of the summer blockbuster genre.
The documentary was released in July on National Geographic, Disney+ and Hulu. It tells in detail about the creation of the film, its effects on culture and the lives of those who’ve worked on it. Also in June, NBC aired the original film in prime time with an exclusive introduction by Steven Spielberg.
To mark the anniversary, ‘’Jaws’’ will be screened again in IMAX and 3D cinemas from August 29 to September 4, 2025. The anniversary also features the release of exclusive merchandise: figures, posters, LEGO sets, clothing from UNIQLO and H&M, books, and even shoes.
However, once again, the film caused a large-scale debate over marine life preservation; during the 50 years since the “Jaws” release the attitudes towards sharks have changed dramatically. Scientists and ecologists reminded that the film greatly affected the perception of sharks as dangerous predators, which led to their mass extermination. Steven Spielberg admitted that this effect was unexpected and upsetting to him.
50 years later “Jaws” remains a live reminder of the power of cinematography and its impact on society both from an art and an ecological perspective.
