Firó is one of the most important national celebrations in Soller in Mallorca. This event, filled with history and traditions, annually attracts thousands of people to celebrate the victory of the city’s inhabitants over the Saracen invasion on May 11, 1561.
The main part of the holiday is a historical reconstruction of the Saracen’s attack: from their landing at the port to the final battle in the center of Soller. This day is celebrated with loud gunshots, fireworks and passionate cries of the inhabitants expressing their love for their city and its history.
The preparations for the day take place in advance. Participants who will act out the attack sew historical costumes. The battle usually begins on the beach of Soller, where, according to the legend, the Moors landed from boats on the shore of the island. Then the battle begins, with the sound of blank shots and firecrackers, it moves to the center of the city. In the end, the Christians win, and the Moors capitulate, everyone celebrating their victory.
The events of the holiday take place throughout four days. First, on the second Sunday of May, the craft market opens, and on Monday the historical reconstruction of the battle begins. This is a spectacular event that always attracts a lot of people. Therefore, plan your transport and time to visit Soller very carefully in advance.
