“Der fliegende Holländer” (The Flying Dutchman) Opera

For the first time ever the opera season of the Principal theatre presents Richard Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman”, which is widely considered one of the composer’s key works, written in its own libretto. This opera signifies Wagner’s transition to a deeper, more philosophical and poetic understanding of musical theatre.
The opera is set around a legendary sailor who was cursed for blasphemy and doomed to wander the oceans forever. Only once in every seven years is he allowed to land on the shore to try and find the love capable of atoning for his sins and free him from eternal damnation. The story of fate, loyalty and the power of selfless love unfolds against the backdrop of the sea and Wagner’s dramatic music.
The opera premiered in Dresden in 1843.
