Ball de Bot is the name for traditional Mallorcan dances that form an important part of the island’s cultural heritage. This translates to “the jumping dance” which reflects the energetic and rhythmical nature of the movements.
Ball de Bot consists of several types of dances:
Bolero – an elegant and romantic dance with soft and fluid movements.
Jota – an energetic dance with a fast rhythm and dynamical steps.
Fandango – a slow dance focused on the pair’s interactions.
The dancing is accompanied by the music of traditional Mallorcan instruments:
Xeremia – Mallorcan bagpipe or gaita.
Tamborí – a small drum.
Fabiol – a small flute with a characteristic sound.
The dancers are dressed in traditional clothes. Women are wearing long skirts, embroidered blouses and scarves and men – linen shirts, wide pants and belts.
Ball de Bot is usually performed at local celebrations, festivals and fairs. The dance is popular among both residents and tourists. Spectators are often invited to join the dance. There are dancing groups and schools on the island, where you can learn this art.
Ball de Bot is not just a dance, it’s a way to convey the Mallorcan spirit, its joy and connection to the traditions.
